Comparative analysis of cover pages of magazines Respekt and Reflex in the period of 2009-2010 (textual and semiotic comparison)

Bachelor thesis "A comparative analysis of cover pages of magazines Respekt and Reflex in the period of 2009 - 2010 (textual and semiotic comparison)" deals with semiotic analysis of the cover pages of two similar weekly magazines in the same period. Research sample includes five covers of each magazine which shows Czech political figures. The first part of this thesis it describes the theoretical essence of semiotics. The second one is about magazines and theory of cover. In practical part analyses the covers of both magazines with the aim of overall comparison in terms of their communicating intentions, construction of reality and its work with myths and stereotypes. Visual and language codes are studied in terms of denotation, connotation and implied postmodern myths. In the recent media discursus has been interpreting signs and symbols, decoding the hidden meanings and perceptions of the dominant ideology in the construct of reality. Attention is focused on the design of Reflex' photomontage and Respekt's drawing, as well as on composition, colors and using stereotypes. Result of analysis shows a consistent approach of both magazines to the dominant ideology, but a different approach to construct reality and creating the communication plan, which comes just from the way of processing.
Literární noviny in the 90s of the 20th century and Ludvík Vaculík

This master's thesis deals with the cultural-political weekly magazine Literární noviny. The first part is dedicated to the forms of the Literární noviny from 1927, when the magazine emerged, to 1969, when it ceased to be published for twenty-one years. The main focus of the thesis is its second part, which explores the life of the Literární noviny in the 90s. On 5 April, 1990 the weekly was renewed as an appendix of the Lidové noviny, and two years later it became an independent magazine. Its chief editor was Vladimír Karfík until 1999. I did an interview with Vladimír Karfík, which is attachment of this thesis. I concentrated on the weekly's editorial composition, especially on the sections and its thematic structure, but also on the social and cultural context of the 90s. The main research method used for analysing the composition of the thematic structure is quantitative content analysis. The research questions are related both to the topics that formed the content of the Literární noviny in the 90s, and their transformation within that decade. I also used the elements of qualitative analysis, to compare the transformation of the front page of the weekly magazine in the above mentioned period. Front Pages of Reflex Magazine and Construction of Hyperreality

According the research there were noticed few interesting elements of simulacra "comportment" and about the nature of hyperreality itself. First of all there was described, that the nature of hyperreality is very different compared to realities of lower levels. Hyperreality is a semantic space which is filled with simulacra. Those simulacra are holding very strong meaning, which is technically one of the basic elements of their nature. At the other hand not every meaning did pass to the hyperreal stadium. It means that in the end hyperreality suffers the lack of meanings. Its spectre of meanings is simply very limited. Although simulacrum holds a very strong meaning, it can disappear. In this paper there were described two ways, how it can happen. Both ways are directly connected with interest of audience, which mean in this case the interest of public. Simulacra can simply disappear when the audience forget them because of change of the cultural rules. The other way is a kind of simulacra duel. Against older simulacrum is putted a new one. If audience because of any reason decide, that the new simulacrum fits better to their needs, that the old one, the old one disappears. The Content Analysis of the Magazine Mobility from the Gender Perspective

The diploma thesis focuses on the gender analysis of the contents based on the Mobility's magazine cover pages. The thesis emphasizes the identification of men and women's representations in this magazine. The Mobility magazine was published once a month from the 1999 till 2011. The analysis is conducted on the complete set of the individual cover pages and deals with an interesting development in these representations. The thesis is divided into theoretical and analytical part. The theoretical part is dedicated to media in the connection with its gender theory and power in the society. Furthermore, this part includes theories dealing with the gender representations in advertisement (Goffman, Sztompka, Indruchová). In the analytical part there is a comparison of the mentioned theories with the examined sample. The detailed description of the individual categories identified within this analysis is presented as well. The thesis focuses on the identification of the specific features observed in a given period of Mobility magazine publishing . Verbal and Visual Contents at the Title Pages of Newspaper Aha! and their Semiotic Productin

The title page is clearly the main representative of the print media, which often determines their success or failure. An even greater justification for the tabloid newspapers whose everyday existence depends on nonabonent readers. A typical representative of tabloid domestic news is Aha!, which creates his main communicator with no real functioning of the theoretical model. This does not mean that it does not work with repetitive characters or signs in this work to clearly identify key elements for creating and thus the theoretical framework that can be used in practice. To this will serve as an analysis relating to the actual Aha!, so comparisons with by the Lidove noviny and Hospodarske noviny. Researched topic will also be given one of the topical issues related images and text.
Typography of the monthly maganize žena a móda (1949-1995)

The thesis "Typography of the monthly magazine Žena a móda (1949-1995)" deals with the graphical appearance of this magazine and describes the changes in its typography. Magazine ran from January 1949 to July 1995, when it was cancelled because of financial difficulties. The aim of this thesis is to divide the years of Žena a móda's existence into periods, depending on its specific graphical appearance. This bachelor thesis outlines the historical context, technical conditions and the influence the Marxism-Leninism had on the graphic design. Moreover, the basic vocabulary of typographical terms is included. The thesis analyses the graphical appearance of the magazine periodically, with the focus on physical qualities, typesetting, typeface, headlines, front pages or advertisement. Furthermore, the graphical appearance of the world's most famous magazines is outlined briefly towards the end of the thesis, as well as the magazine's competition after 1989. This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the front pages of two main Czech newspapers - MF Dnes and Pravo. The front pages are analyzed six weeks before the General elections in 2010. The thesis aims to specify how each newspaper defines and informs about the left-wing and right-wing politics and which topics does it connect with both spectrums. Dissertation also touches the political aspect of the definition of the left and the right with a respect to historical development of both spectrums. Afterwards the dissertation compares both newspapers and tries to figure out, in what topics they differ when defining the left and the right wing. The analysis approaches both newspapers the same objective way, not looking at their political inclination.
Tte usage of composite photography in czech media - Photographs on frontpages of magazines Tyden and Reflex

Thesis called The Usage of Composite Photography in Czech Media - Photographs on Frontpages of Magazines Reflex and Týden deals with the form of photographic illustration and its role in media. The work introduces why photography is since its beggining reviewed as a realistic media, how this concept was influenced over the years by manipulation of analogue photography and how it is affected by digital manipulation thesedays. Photomontage has been used more and more on the front pages of news and social magazines since the start of digital age. This work, by means of in-depth interviews with authors of illustrations and analysis of visual material, evaluates the state of Czech contemporary media photomontage on the example of magazines Reflex and Týden. These two magazines use photographic illustration on their front pages inn a unique extent. The analysis concentrates on content and character of the photomontages as well as it tries to define the process of their making. Ethical aspects of the topic are taken into account as well. The main ethical point in this area is to differentiate news photography and photographic illustration. The work also describes techniques of production of composite photography.
